In general when we come across the IoT technology, then we are automatically directed to the network of digital devices that are connected to one another by the internet. However, if we think about its role in the Smart Cities, then, it's impressive! From smart parking to waste management, IoT holds the potential to make everything better. Let’s explore how IoT influences smart cities.
IoT for smart cities
If we talk about some of the most populated cities in the world, then we have Tokyo with 38 million people, Jakarta with 31 million people and Delhi with 26 million people. Further, it has been estimated that by the year 2030, nearly 60 percent of the world population would be shifted to the major cities. This shift from the rural to the urban cities would result in increased levels of air pollution, freshwater scarcity, traffic problems, and others. Thereby, for sustaining such a big population, we need a robust system and in this direction, IoT technology seems to offer great results.
Smart cities serve as a great role model for the economic, cultural and technological growth of a country. For example, the IoT technology can assist with the smart lighting system in the cities, monitor the CO2 emission in the city by bringing electric-vehicles on the road, and thereby offer a pollution-free environment in the city. For example, Automation company Siemens has introduced a City Air Management Tool (CyAM) which is a cloud-based and IoT driven software that gives accurate forecasts about the pollution-level in the city. Traffic management system
Traffic jams are a common problem in all the major cities in the world. To resolve this problem, cities like Los Angeles have implemented an IoT based Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), which comprises sensor-based pavements and traffic lights. The smart pavement collects information about the traffic on the roads and using this information, the traffic lights operate.
Smart Parking system
Finding a parking space is always a big problem in the cities. To resolve this, a smart parking system can be employed. The Smart Parking system provides complete information about when a parking space is available, how many parking spaces are occupied and by what time the parking space would be available in the future.
Smart Waste Management System
Every day several metric tons of city-produced waste is to be managed, which is a big problem. With the help of IoT based smart waste management systems, this problem can be solved with a great ease. The waste containers are sensor-based, which alerts the waste collection truck driver when it passes by and notifies further when it has been emptied.
All in IoT is not just a choice for the smart cities, it's a necessity that ensures effective waste management, energy-efficient lighting system, smooth passway for the city vehicles, round-the-clock security system and others.
